About Us

WHO WE ARE

The Data Protection Commission of Zambia (DPC), the authority responsible for ensuring the protection of personal data and promoting the rights of individuals in Zambia.

About the Act

  • The Data Protection Act no 3 of 2021 is a data protection legislative framework for Zambia that was enacted to promote effective use and safeguarding of personal data in May 2023.  
  • The Act addresses the critical need for data privacy and data protection by establishing a comprehensive system that governs how the public and private bodies collect, use, transmit, store, secure and process personal data and sensitive personal data.  
  • The Data Protection Act No 3 of 2021 places a strong emphasis on the protection of personal data and sensitive personal data by recognizing its intrinsic value in national economic development. 
  • The Act is also gives rights to data subjects, some which are access to their personal data, protection of personal data and other rights such as consent of use.

Our Mandate

  • Data Protection Enforcement: Ensure the effective enforcement of data protection laws in Zambia, safeguarding the privacy rights of individuals​
  • Compliance Oversight: Monitor and regulate organizations’ compliance with data protection regulations, and promoting responsible data handling practices​
  • Public Education: Educate individuals and organizations about data protection rights and responsibilities, fostering a culture of privacy awareness​
  • Data Security: Promote the adoption of robust data security measures to prevent data breaches and cyberattacks. ​
  • International Cooperation: Collaborate with international data protection authorities to facilitate cross-border data transfers and ensure global data protection standards are upheld.​
